Christ College is one of the oldest and most successful schools in UK. Founded in 1541 by Henry VIII it occupies an enviable site on the outskirts of Brecon, a safe, small market town in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The School buildings reflect the schools ancient past as well as its determination to provide the best modern facilities possible for its pupils. The Chapel and Dining Hall, both in daily use, date from the 13th Century when the site was occupied by a Dominican Friary. There are 320 pupils at Christ College Brecon, a number which enables us to offer a real academic focus as well as an unrivalled extra-curricular programme whilst giving everyone the chance to know everyone else and to develop a real sense of belonging. Parents and guardians value the unique care and concern pupils receive at the school – individual mentoring and support from highly qualified and experienced staff which extends beyond the classroom to every aspect of daily life and leads to a high level of achievement in both academic and non-academic areas. It is no surprise then that Christ College has an outstanding record of academic achievement. The 2008/9 academic year concluded with the best A level and GCSE results ever recorded at Christ College. In A level examinations, pupils achieved 99.3% pass rate in the A Level examinations, with 75% of grades being A or B grades, a 3% improvement on last year. Eleven candidates achieved straight A grades in 3 or more subjects and these outstanding results mean that Christ College leavers are now set to head off to a range of top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Exeter, Durham and York, to study a range of subjects from Engineering to Oriental Languages and from Politics to Marine Biology. Maths and Science departments again performed particularly strongly, with 80% of all entries in Maths and Science graded A or B and an impressive 96% of all Art candidates gained A or B grades, and 90% of candidates studting Religious Studies achieved A or B grades. There were also outstanding GCSE results with over 94% of grades achieving A*-C and an incredible 47% of grades were A* or A. It is also important to stress that these academic achievements should be seen against a background of Christ College pupils’ full engagement to an excellent standard in sport, with over 30 pupils representing their country over the last 3 years, as well as music, drama, art and other pastoral contributions to the life of the school community. There is a full programme of extra-curricular activities with participation in the voluntary, but highly popular, Combined Cadet Force, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. The Financial Times has, in the past, placed Christ College in the Top 3 of all Independent Boarding Schools in terms of Value For Money. The Christ College Foundation, which has The Prince of Wales as its patron, has made significant progress as it strives to offer more scholarships and bursaries and better academic, cultural, sporting and social facilities to as many young people as possible regardless of their financial circumstances.
